Staying Active This Winter – From the Comfort of Home

Staying Active This Winter – From the Comfort of Home

As the days grow shorter and the weather turns colder, it’s completely natural for our routines to change. Fewer daylight hours, icy pavements and wet mornings can make it harder to get outside - and for many people, this can have a real impact on both physical and mental wellbeing.

Regular movement is widely recognised as one of the most effective ways to support health at any age. Gentle exercise can help maintain strength, balance and mobility, while also playing an important role in supporting mood, confidence and overall mental wellbeing.

During the winter months in particular, staying active can help combat low energy levels, stiffness, and feelings of isolation.

However, we also know that winter brings challenges. Not everyone feels comfortable heading out in poor weather, and for those managing health conditions, recovering from illness, or simply feeling less confident, getting to in-person classes isn’t always easy.

That’s why Community Wellness Services has recently launched a programme of live online exercise classes, designed to be inclusive, accessible and reassuring - all delivered from the comfort of home.

Exercise that fits around you

Our online classes are instructor-led and take place live via Zoom, offering real-time guidance and encouragement without the pressure often associated with gyms. Sessions are designed to be gentle and adaptable, suitable for beginners and those returning to exercise after a break.

Classes include options such as seated movement, balance-focused exercises, mindful movement and Pilates - all aimed at supporting everyday strength, flexibility, balance and wellbeing. Participants can choose which sessions suit them best and attend as many or as few as they wish.

One of the key pieces of feedback received so far is how reassuring people find the flexibility. There’s no expectation to attend every class, no obligation to keep up, and no pressure if a particular session doesn’t feel right on a given day. It’s about listening to your body and moving in a way that feels supportive.

Supporting wellbeing beyond physical health

Exercise isn’t just about physical fitness. Moving regularly, even gently, can help reduce stress, support better sleep, and improve mood - benefits that are especially valuable during the darker winter months. For some people, the simple routine of a scheduled class and seeing familiar faces on screen can also help maintain a sense of connection and structure.

Participants have found these classes to be a positive step in rebuilding confidence after illness, and others who appreciate being able to take part without worrying about travel, weather or accessibility.

Free access throughout February

To support local residents through the remainder of winter, Community Wellness Services is offering free access to all online exercise classes throughout February.

To take part, simply email info@cwsuk.ltd and quote “WEB”. You’ll then receive all the details needed to join.

There’s no commitment, no payment details required, and no pressure to continue beyond the free period. Our aim is simply to make movement more accessible and to support wellbeing in a way that feels manageable and welcoming.

Winter can be a challenging time, but staying active — even from home — can make a meaningful difference. Sometimes, small, gentle steps are exactly where progress begins.
