Men’s Health: Why It’s Time to Talk, Move, and Take Action

Men’s Health Week (15th to 21st June) is an important reminder:

Looking after your health matters - and it’s never too late to start.

But for many men, that’s easier said than done.

Whether it’s putting things off, staying busy, or simply not knowing where to begin, it’s easy for health to take a back seat.

Research consistently shows that men are less likely to:

  • Talk about their health
  • Seek support early
  • Prioritise their wellbeing

Often, it’s not because they don’t care - it’s because they’re used to just “getting on with it.”

And over time, that can take its toll.

The Pressure to Just Carry On

Many men grow up feeling like they should stay strong, keep things to themselves and not ask for help.

So instead of addressing things early, they carry on.

That might look like:

  • Ignoring aches and pains
  • Brushing off stress
  • Saying “I’m fine” when they’re not

Over time, this can lead to stress building up, physical health being overlooked and feeling isolated without really realising it.

Movement is a Powerful Start

The good news is - you don’t need to overhaul your life overnight.

Simple, consistent movement can:

  •  Improve energy levels
  • Support heart health
  • Boost mood and reduce stress

And it doesn’t have to mean the gym.

A short walk.  A bit of fresh air.
A gentle session to get moving again.

It all counts.

Talking is Just as Important

Health isn’t just physical.

Having someone to talk to - whether that’s a friend, partner, or even a casual conversation—can make a huge difference.

You don’t have to open up all at once.
You don’t have to have the right words.

But starting somewhere matters.

Even a simple “I’ve not been feeling quite right lately” can be the first step.

Small Steps, Big Differences

If you’re not sure where to begin:

  • Start with something manageable
  • Do something you enjoy
  • Keep it simple
  • Don’t put pressure on yourself

Progress doesn’t have to be perfect - it just has to start.

You're Not On Your Own

Whatever step you take - whether it’s moving more, talking more, or just taking a bit of time for yourself - it matters.

And there are always people out there who understand and want to help.
