Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make the biggest difference – a walk in the park, a coffee together, a good conversation or simply having something to look forward to each week.
For 88-year-old Maxine, her regular visits from Community Companion Sharon have become just that.
Sharon visits Maxine every week through our Community Companions service, which provides companionship for older adults across Sheffield who may benefit from a little extra company or help getting out and about.
Over time, their regular visits have developed into a genuine friendship.
Rather than every visit having to involve a big day out or a carefully planned activity, Sharon and Maxine enjoy spending time together doing the everyday things that many of us can take for granted.
Their weekly strolls in the park have become something Maxine really looks forward to – an opportunity to get outside, enjoy some fresh air and, most importantly, spend time in good company.

One particular trip to the park provided a brilliant reminder that age shouldn't stop us from enjoying ourselves.
During their walk, Maxine spotted the swings.
At 88, she decided she fancied having a go!
It was a simple moment, but one that captured exactly what companionship can be about: laughter, shared experiences and having someone alongside you who encourages you to continue doing the things that bring you joy.
On another of their regular outings, Sharon and Maxine followed their park stroll with a visit to a local café.
There was no grand itinerary – just coffee, a piece of flapjack and some time spent together watching the world go by.
And that's precisely why these moments matter.
Companionship isn't always about doing something extraordinary. Sometimes it's having someone to go for a walk with. Someone to sit and have a coffee with. Someone to talk to. And someone who gives you another reason to get out of the house and enjoy your local community.

What started as weekly companionship has grown into a warm and meaningful connection between Sharon and Maxine.
Their story demonstrates what we hope our Community Companions service can provide: connection, independence, friendship and more opportunities to continue enjoying life.
For Maxine, it means regular outings and something to look forward to.
For us, it is a wonderful example of how the right companionship can make even the most ordinary moments feel special.
Our Community Companions provide friendly, practical, one-to-one support for older adults across Sheffield.
Whether that's getting out for a walk, attending an appointment, enjoying a trip to the shops or simply having someone to sit down with for a chat and a cup of tea, the support is shaped around the individual.
