Move With Care
Helping more people become active, connected and confident in their own communities
Move with Care is a new community-based physical activity project being developed by Community Wellness Services CIC to support older adults, people living with long-term health conditions, and people who may feel isolated or unable to access traditional exercise opportunities.
The project has been shaped by conversations with local communities, Sheffield’s Move Well programme, health and community partners, and organisations working directly with residents across the city.

Taking activity into the community

We know that a traditional gym or leisure centre isn’t right for everyone.
For people living with long-term health conditions, reduced mobility or low confidence, barriers such as transport, accessibility, cost or simply not feeling comfortable in a traditional exercise setting can make it harder to get active.
Move with Care aims to provide a different option — safe, welcoming and professionally supported activity delivered in familiar community settings.
The project will initially focus on communities including Shiregreen, Wisewood, Lower Stannington, Westfield, Greenhill/Woodseats and Gleadless Valley, working alongside trusted local organisations already embedded in those areas.
More than an exercise class
Activities will be shaped around the needs of each community and may include chair-based exercise, gentle fitness, Tai Chi, yoga, dance, mobility work and inclusive games such as Boccia and New Age Kurling.
Sessions will be delivered by appropriately qualified exercise professionals with experience of supporting people living with long-term health conditions.
Just as importantly, Move with Care will create opportunities for people to stay, talk and build connections.
We know from our existing work that the friendships and sense of belonging created around an activity can be just as important as the activity itself.

Connecting health, activity and communities
Move with Care will work alongside Sheffield’s existing health, social prescribing and physical activity pathways, helping create more suitable opportunities for people who may currently struggle to find an activity that feels right for them.
The project aims to help people become more active, improve mobility and confidence, maintain independence, reduce loneliness and build stronger connections within their communities.
Over time, local residents will also have opportunities to help shape and support the sessions, including through Community Champion and Advocate roles.
Move with Care reflects the wider approach of Community Wellness Services CIC: bringing appropriate health and wellbeing support closer to the people who need it.
Our aim is not simply to deliver a short-term programme, but to help create local groups that feel part of their communities and can continue to grow over time.
