Pain to Confidence Using Pilates

From Pain and Limited Mobility to Feeling Stronger and More Confident: Margaret's Story

When Margaret first joined one of our community Pilates classes, she wasn't looking for a major lifestyle change.

Like many people, she had been living with aches, pains, and mobility challenges for years and simply wanted to find a way to keep moving.

What followed was a journey that not only improved her strength and mobility but also boosted her confidence and helped her stay active and independent.

This is Margaret's story.

Living with Long-Term Health Challenges

Margaret's mobility had gradually become more affected over the years due to a combination of age-related changes, diabetes, and a lower back injury sustained during her career in care work more than 20 years ago.

As time went on, everyday tasks became increasingly difficult.

She struggled to stand still for any length of time without experiencing lower back pain, regularly suffered from painful night-time leg cramps, and found getting up from a chair uncomfortable.

Like many people living with long-term health conditions, these challenges had slowly become part of everyday life.

Taking the First Step

Margaret hadn't set out looking for a fitness class.

Instead, it was her daughter, who already attended one of our Yoga and Pilates sessions, who encouraged her to come along and give it a try.

One of the things Margaret found most helpful was the supportive environment.

There was no pressure to keep up with anyone else.

Everyone was encouraged to work at their own pace and focus on what felt right for them.

"We were encouraged to go at our own pace, which increased my confidence and enabled me to gradually attempt more movements."

Margaret began by taking part in exercises from a chair before gradually progressing to exercises on the mat as her confidence and ability improved.

Building Strength and Confidence

Over time, Margaret began to notice significant improvements.

She found breathing easier, felt stronger, and experienced less pain, particularly following sessions.

Activities that had once caused discomfort became easier, and she was able to stand for longer periods without suffering from lower back pain.

The stretching exercises also helped improve flexibility in her hamstrings and, importantly, stopped the night-time leg cramps that had previously disrupted her sleep.

These improvements weren't just physical.

As her strength increased, so did her confidence.

An Unexpected Test

In early February, Margaret suffered a fall that badly bruised her back and resulted in a visit to A&E.

Fortunately, she made a full recovery.

Looking back, Margaret believes the strength she had built through Pilates played an important role in helping her avoid more serious injuries.

"The strengthening of my core muscles through Pilates is, I believe, what saved me from any cracked ribs."

For Margaret, this was a powerful reminder of the importance of maintaining strength and mobility as we get older.

Looking Ahead

Now retired, Margaret wants to remain as active and independent as possible.

She enjoys spending time with her family in Sheffield and travelling by train to visit relatives in Reading.

She plans to continue attending her Pilates classes and sees them as an important part of maintaining her health, wellbeing, and independence.

When asked whether she would recommend the class to others, her answer was simple:

Absolutely.

And when asked to describe her experience in three words, she chose:

Energising. Healthy. Positive.
